Final Summer Getaway

I booked this property with the intention of a final summer getaway with my kids before school started. The property was just as pictured and was truly a wonderful experience. The kids had so much fun playing the pond all day and building sand castles. As a family, we were able to unplug from electronics and the grind of everyday life...exactly what we needed. I even managed to read two books! The cabin was very clean and fully equipped with everything we needed. We can't wait to return for another getaway from life's hustle and bustle. Thank you, Peggy, for sharing your beautiful property with us!

Exceeded our expectations except...

The house is adorable. Very well maintained and equipped. Our entire family took full advantage of everything it had to offer. We swam, kayaked, fished, caught frogs, played badminton, ate every meal on the screened in porch, and enjoyed spending our unplugged time with puzzles and games. We brought our bikes with us and spent several afternoons on the nearby Elroy-Sparta trail. Our only issue during our stay was the noise. Upon arrival there is a sheet that the owners provide which lists things to know about the house and one item mentions "war noises" from nearby (12 miles) Fort McCoy that can sometimes be heard, especially on weekends. During our stay, the sounds of explosions and assault rifles started Thursday evening (we arrived the day before) and were still going when we left on Monday morning. These sounds were pretty consistent throughout the day and continued well into the middle of the night, waking us up on several occasions. We turned to using the radio during the day and fans at night to help buffer the noise, but when outside (which is where you want to spend your days at this great house), there is nothing to help cover them up and it really took away from the anticipated peaceful and serene setting . Clearly the property owners have no control over such matters but as it was something that was not disclosed prior to our arrival and that it impacted the quality of our stay it is worthy of being included in our review.

Incredible family vacation!!!

Let me start out that this was the best family vacation we’ve been on!!! Peg was extremely helpful with ideas and tips for our family. We were looking for a very quiet place that was secluded enough where we felt we could “unplug”, but also have the comforts of home (and then some)! Our 4 year old was adopted at 26 months from an institutional setting in China, is autistic and unable to walk, brittle bones, but although it was not technically wheelchair accessible we very easily could get him from place to place. He was a completely at ease and had a BLAST he laughed all weekend and while he does not sleep well outside our home, he had no problem at this cabin! There is one bedroom with a door and we dedicated that room to him (there he also could have the temperature regulation) With the window air conditioning. I’m sure the all day swimming in the pond also contributed to a good night’s sleep tee hee. Everything you need is there too! We totally overpacked!!! Extra bug spray, life jackets, sand and water toys, movies and games, etc etc. While we didn’t need the washer, that was also an option! We did not have much cellphone reception (but I was so happy we were forced again to “unplug”)! I went for a long run the hills were tough, but it was so fun I barely noticed!! We LOVED our family bike ride down the Sparta trail and walk through the incredible (and a little spooky) old railroad tunnel. We enjoyed going to a nearby playground in Tomah and just the cute little towns. One thing we forgot to bring was a paper map so once our cell service went out it was an adventure to get to the cabin (but not hard). The bigs were almost non existent especially considering it’s attached to a pond!!! It was reassuring though that if needed we could eat still outside under the screened in porch. We LOVED the after higher energy activities by relaxing by the fire pit right up against the pond!!! The stars were incredible and the artillery fire was fun to faintly hear in the distance with the solders practicing. Will we be coming again? Yes!!!
